The handheld detectors that journalists carry near the front cannot see fiber-optic FPV drones. These drones fly on a cable and transmit no radio signal. RSF’s 2026 safety guide says they can be detected only by sight or by sound. It tells reporters to listen, and it estimates 3 to 7 seconds from a diving FPV to impact. We assess that the ear is being asked to do a sensor’s job. Our report covers what each drone sounds like, where personal detectors fail, and what acoustic detection could add.
